What can Freddy do?

Ask about your money in plain English. Just type a question in the Chat panel and Freddy will pull up the answer from your financial data.

Here are some things you can ask:

  • "What's my balance?" -- Freddy checks your connected accounts and tells you instantly.
  • "How much did I spend on groceries last month?" -- He'll look through your transactions and add it up.
  • "Am I over budget?" -- Compares your actual spending against your budgets.
  • "Show me my net worth" -- Adds up everything you own minus everything you owe.
  • "What's my income vs expenses?" -- Shows your cashflow over time.
  • "Did I buy anything from The Warehouse?" -- Searches your transactions for you.

You can also ask Freddy to navigate the app for you -- say "show me the spending panel" and he'll open it up.

How does Freddy categorise transactions?

When your bank transactions come in, Freddy works out what category each one belongs to -- things like Groceries, Utilities, Transport, Eating Out, and so on.

He does this using several methods, in order of speed:

  1. Remembering merchants -- If he's seen a merchant before (like Countdown or Z Energy), he already knows the category. Instant.
  2. Your custom rules -- If you've set up any rules (e.g. "anything containing 'Spark' is Utilities"), those are checked next.
  3. Common NZ patterns -- Freddy knows the usual NZ merchants -- supermarkets, petrol stations, telcos, power companies -- and matches them automatically.
  4. Your bank's data -- If your bank provides category information through Akahu, Freddy uses that too.
  5. Learning from your history -- Freddy looks at how you've categorised similar transactions in the past and follows the same pattern.
  6. AI analysis -- For anything still unclear, Freddy uses AI to make a best guess.

If Freddy can't confidently categorise something, he'll flag it as uncategorised so you can sort it yourself.

Freddy learns from you

Every time you change a category on a transaction, Freddy takes note. Over time, he gets better at categorising new transactions because he remembers your preferences.

For example, if you recategorise "UBER *EATS" from Transport to Eating Out, Freddy will remember that for next time. After a few corrections, he'll start getting it right automatically.

Freddy remembers things

Freddy has a memory system. He remembers key facts about your financial situation -- things like your income, your goals, and your preferences. This means his answers get more personalised over time.

You don't need to set this up. It happens automatically as you chat with him.

Privacy

Your data stays yours. On the desktop app, Freddy can run entirely on your computer using local AI -- no data is sent to the cloud unless you choose to enable cloud AI providers. See AI Settings for more on this.

On the web app, Freddy uses cloud AI to process your questions, but your financial data stays in your secure account.
