Akahu Setup
What is Akahu?
Akahu is a New Zealand open banking aggregator accredited by Payments NZ. It provides secure, read-only access to your bank accounts and transaction history. FFFFinance uses Akahu as its sole bank data source.
Connecting your bank
- Open FFFFinance and go to Settings > Connections.
- Click Connect your bank.
- You'll be taken to Akahu's secure login page, where you sign in with your bank credentials directly with Akahu — FFFFinance never sees your bank password.
- Choose which accounts to connect and confirm.
- You're returned to FFFFinance and your accounts start syncing immediately.
That's it. No tokens to copy, no developer apps to create.
You can connect multiple banks — just click Connect your bank again for each one.
How sync works
- On first sync, FFFFinance fetches your account balances and up to 90 days of transaction history.
- After that, syncs are incremental — only new transactions are fetched.
- You can trigger a manual sync from Settings > Connections at any time.
Supported banks
ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, and Westpac are fully supported. Other NZ institutions connected through Akahu will also work.
Auto-categorisation
Transactions are automatically categorised using a combination of:
- Your rules — any custom rules you set up take priority
- Keyword patterns — NZ-specific patterns for common merchants (Countdown, Z Energy, Spark, etc.)
- Akahu enrichment — Akahu's own category data when available
If FFFFinance gets a category wrong, correct it and it learns from the correction for future transactions.
Revoking access
You can disconnect your bank accounts at any time:
- In FFFFinance: Settings > Connections > Disconnect
- In Akahu: my.akahu.nz — revoke FFFFinance's access independently of the app
